Cette conception trouve son origine dans la période Edo, lorsque les samouraïs avaient besoin d'un moyen sûr et sécurisé pour ranger leurs lames lorsqu'ils ne s'en servaient pas. Le terme Shirasaya se traduit par « fourreau blanc », non pas pour la couleur, mais pour refléter son apparence simple et sans fioritures.
